Un’antenna, la più grande del mondo, che emetteva un segnale chiamato “picchio”, tanto potente da rendere necessaria per il suo funzionamento, la costruzione nelle sue vicinanze, di una centrale nucleare. La centrale era quella di Chernobyl, protagonista del drammatico incidente del 26 aprile 1986, incidente che causò anche lo spegnimento dell’antenna. Oggi la struttura è una ulteriore minaccia alla sicurezza di quei luoghi e non solo, perché un suo crollo alzerebbe un quantitativo di polveri e detriti radioattivi paragonabile in parte all’esplosione del 1986.
Duga3 was a secret project of the Soviet Union for the detection of intercontinental ballistic missiles. An antenna, the largest in the world, which emitted a signal called “woodpecker”, so powerful that it was necessary for its operation, the construction in its vicinity, of a nuclear power plant. The power plant was Chernobyl, the protagonist of the dramatic accident of April 26, 1986, an incident that also caused the antenna to shut down. Today the structure is a further threat to the safety of those places and not only, because its collapse would raise a quantity of dust and radioactive debris comparable in part to the 1986 explosion.
